Dr. David Peterson

Dr. David Peterson serves as Partner and Executive Director of Educational Design at LearningLeaders, a Hong Kong and Shanghai-based consulting firm specializing in professional skills training and lifelong educational services. At LearningLeaders, Dr. Peterson designs long term educational objectives for advanced and elite competitive debaters.

Dr. Peterson earned his PhD in Sociology and Critical Theory from the University of California, Irvine. His research focused on the relationship between competitive debate in institutions of secondary and post-secondary education and the resolution of race, class and gender conflict and inequality. As an undergraduate student Dr. Peterson was one of the top college debaters in the United States and a 3-time qualifier for the prestigious National Debate Tournament (NDT). He has also coached debate at the highest levels in middle school, high school and college in the United States as well as in South Korea and China. Teams coached by Dr. Peterson have competed in the Tournament of Champions (TOC), USA National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) Championship, National Debate Tournament (NDT), the Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA) National Tournament, the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) and many others. He is currently the head debate coach of the Fudan University English Debating Society and the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics Debate Team.

Previously, Dr. Peterson worked with the team at Dipont Education Management Group as the Senior Research Manager in the Department of Research and Development and as an Academic Committee Member for the National Speech and Debate Association of China. David’s responsibilities included designing and implementing public speaking and debate curriculum and overseeing academic quality control of the training programs throughout China.

Dr. Peterson lives in Shanghai with his wife and daughter and speaks Mandarin Chinese.
