4th Annual World Scholars Debate Open – Nanjing

April 15

On the weekend of April 1st, LearningLeaders Coach Maggie took three students, Ray Tsao (SAS 9th grade, Elite Debate), Renee Liu (SAS 9th grade, Elite Debate), and Catherine Wu (SAS 10th grade, Advanced Debate) to Nanjing to participate in the 4th Annual World Scholars Debate Open. Participants came from some of the top schools in China, including Nanjing Foreign Language School, Wuhan Foreign Language School, and the China National High School Debate Team. A total of 20 teams participated in this World Schools style parliamentary debate tournament.

Judges for this tournament are very experienced and notoriously tough. In fact, Chief adjudicator Loke Wing Fatt, “father of parliamentary debate in China,” flew judges in from around China and Southeast Asia just for the event! The competition was a combination of prepared and impromptu motions, and LearningLeaders’ team displayed an impressive performance throughout the three-day event! Out of a total of 8 debates, team LearningLeaders won 5 debates, advancing to the semifinals where they lost by a close margin to Nanjing Foreign Language School’s first seed team. Team LearningLeaders took 3rd place overall in the tournament, and Elite Debate student Ray Tsao received 6th best speaker award for the entire competition.
