Debate: Are Students’ Emotions Over-protected?
In this fantastic article from The Atlantic, authors Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt propose that a social change is sweeping across United States colleges and universities. Dubbed the “The Coddling of the American Mind,” this phenomenon occurs when students are over-protected from seemingly innocuous claims and the authors claim that policing speech and potentially offensive comments on college campuses actually harms the students in the long term.
For a more complete history and analysis of the shift, read the article here. It is a must-read for any parent or guardian wishing to send their son or daughter to an American University and provides great perspective on emotional reasoning and cultural differences.
