LearningLeaders at 2015 WIDPSC in Hong Kong
For one week every spring, some of the best and brightest high school debaters from around the world gather at the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships.
This year, held in Hong Kong, the Championships were a smashing success, featuring students from 5 continents and 60 different schools. Canada, the U.S., South Africa, and Australia, perennial powerhouses at the event, took many of the top places. In fact, the first-ranked competitor NOT from those countries was Michael Tang, of the Shanghai American School.
Michael Tang and Lena Luo (pictured below) were the first competitors ever from China to attend the event. They represented their country and school well at the event, each achieving some great scores throughout the course of the Championships.
Each competitor chooses four of five events in which to participate: Parliamentary Debate, Impromptu Speaking, After Dinner Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, and Interpretive Reading. In a different article, we’ll profile each of the events, complete with rules and tips for success.
The 2016 WIDPSC will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA at Shady Side Academy. LearningLeaders plans to be back next year with more students, so stay tuned for details!
